Choose a stool by its seat height, not the height of its backrest. Measure your counter first, compare the distance between the seat and the surface, and check the actual space beneath the counter before ordering. How to Measure Your Counter and Stool
- Measure vertically from the floor to the top of the counter where you will sit.
- Measure from the floor to the underside, including any lower apron or support that could obstruct your legs.
- Find the stool's floor-to-seat measurement. Overall height includes the backrest and cannot replace seat height.
- Check arm height, seat width, footrest position, and room to enter and leave the seat.
For upholstery, ask whether the listed seat height includes the cushion and how it is measured. A cushion can compress in use; do not assume its thickness disappears completely.
Common Counter and Bar Heights
Retailer guides commonly describe counter surfaces around 34–36 inches high and bar surfaces around 40–42 inches. These are planning ranges, not universal dimensions. Room & Board's stool guide identifies 36 inches as a standard counter height and approximately 30-inch seating for taller bar surfaces.
A kitchen island may have a working counter, a raised eating ledge, or both. Measure the surface you will actually use for meals; the name “island” does not identify the required seat height.
How Much Space Should Be Between Seat and Counter?
A common starting point is a seat about 10–12 inches below the counter's top surface, as described in the Seats and Stools height guide. Treat this as a screening guideline, not guaranteed comfort.
Top-surface difference is not the same as clear legroom. For example, a 36-inch-high surface above a 26-inch seat gives a 10-inch difference. If the underside is 34.5 inches above the floor, the unobstructed vertical gap above that seat is only 8.5 inches. A lower support can reduce it further. Check the actual underside and the intended user's fit.
24-, 26-, and 30-Inch Seats Compared
The following values are subtraction examples. They do not account for countertop thickness, aprons, upholstery compression, or a particular person's comfort.

Moving from a 24-inch seat to a 26-inch seat reduces the gap by two inches at the same counter. A 30-inch seat beneath a 36-inch top leaves only six inches before accounting for the underside, making it a poor starting match. A larger gap is not automatically better either: the eating surface may feel too high relative to the seat.
26-Inch vs. 30-Inch: Choose by Surface Height
Choose 26-inch counter-height seating for most 34–36-inch kitchen counters; choose 30-inch bar-height seating for most 40–42-inch bar surfaces. These are starting ranges. Measure from the floor to the top and underside of the exact surface before ordering.

Counter Height vs. Bar Height
Counter-height surfaces are commonly about 34–36 inches high and generally pair with a 24–26-inch seat. Bar-height surfaces are commonly about 40–42 inches high and generally pair with a 28–30-inch seat. The important number is the stool’s floor-to-seat height, not its overall height.
Common Stool-Height Buying Mistakes
- Buying a 30-inch bar stool for a 36-inch kitchen counter, leaving too little space above the seat.
- Measuring only to the countertop and missing a low apron, support rail, or thick overhang underneath.
- Using the stool’s overall back height instead of its seat height.
- Assuming every kitchen island is counter height; some islands have a raised bar ledge.
- Skipping the product variant check and ordering a different height or finish than intended.
Check the Whole Seating Position
Try the sitting position with your feet supported and enough room to move your knees. Check whether armrests can slide underneath and whether the stool's legs obstruct nearby cabinet doors. In a compact kitchen, test the route behind an occupied stool, not only the space with it tucked away.
For a two-level island, assess each ledge separately. If a counter is unusually low or high, do not force a choice among these three example heights; compare other seat heights against the actual measurements.
